The short rains are finally here and the Mara has been receiving good amounts of rainfall. The grass on the extensive Mara plains is recovering after being lawned for four months by the mega herds of wildebeests.

Today on a fullday game drive Peter, Ferdinand and their guests were having a good time driving around in the mara game reserve. They saw lots of animals but the highlight of the day was seeing two different Leopards at different spots. All the guests were very impressed by this.

Later on that evening, Alex and his two guests were heading back to camp after their first gamedrive in the Mara bushtops wildlife conservancy. Just before geting to camp they spotted a male and female Leopard hanging out together. It seemed they were on 'honeymoon' because they are generally solitary and territorial.

It was leopard treat for all guests staying at Mara bushtops.

The mara river which runs through the serengeti and the masai mara game reserves is the largest drainage in the ecosystem. one of its major attractions is the wildebeests crossings during the migration which is the last remaining wildlife spectacle on earth. On a full day game drive today, there were some gatherings of the wildebeests on the junction where a seasonal river meets the mara. They were waiting to cross and head back into the southern parts. On the opposite side of the river was a lioness waiting for an ambush, so when they started crossing, the predator moved slowly forwards, shortening the strike distance. Then it singled out one male and caught it right next to a huge croton bush not far from where ranger Godsons car was waiting. The golden rules of the lions and other predators is to wait patiently by the riverine bushes for a catch during the crossings.

Ranger Kokan had just picked up his four guests from the kogatende airstrip in the morning and introduced them to the serengeti by first viewing the Mara river which at the moment is swollen as a result of the seasonal rains.There-after, as they did a game drive to the camp, the guests were rewarded with a sighting of the largest spotted cat in africa sunning itself on one of the Kopjes(rocky outcrop). It was very relaxed and was using its tongue to leak its paws as if it had already gotten its breakfast. "Oh what a cute cat !", this was the exclamation that came from one of Kokans guests from the back seat. They were full of admiration for africa's most shy and elusive cat which most of the time would be seeing you when you dont see it.

Today in the early morning game drive, Ranger Deus and his guests came upon some two jackals that were feeding on a wildebeest. As usual, the jackals are not known to kill big game because they  are too light- weight to bring down a Gnu. The gnu had not been eaten much and it was as if the real killers were just around. Ranger Deus and his guests looked around for some minutes, only to see some three lionesses walking away at a distance of about a hundred meters from the feasting Jackals. The jackals being aware that they were not the true owners of the meal, kept on eating and looking around, incase the owners decide to return. Lions are sometimes "wasteful" killers in times of plenty, just killing for practice.

In the serengeti, there are vast areas to explore which are like hidden treasures. some of these areas are impenetrable with thick bushes and big rocks.There also exist some small seasonal rivers which provides water for the animals. At our camp, we never stop admiring the vast lands around us where wild animals sometimes come closer, dotting the magnificient scenery.

At the moment, there are lots of migratory animals that capture the attention of the carnivores like the lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas, as well as scarvengers like vultures and jackals.

Discovery of some new game drive routes across the open savanahs and riverine forests areas and to the rocky hills (kopjes), give us a lot of chances to explore many animal habitats. The rangers here are very proud of these new game drive routes around the camp which would take about three hours on a late afternoon drive.

Meanwhile, lions have been roaring nearly every night, while the hyenas call and laugh, giving us some clue of where to find them on the early morning drives. Migratory wildebeests and zebras are very closer to the camp and more are still coming enroute southwards where they give birth in a syncronised manner. The on-going short rains give them a chance to stay longer and also gives one a feeling of touching them.
