The elephants bieng the largest of the mammals in the savannah are not spared by the bugs. They have developed a habit of wallowing and this is for cooling and later on plastering themselves with mud. Once this is done the elephants know their favourite points to go and scratch. This is mostly important in getting rid of the bugs and if you observe very keenly this points you will notice dead bugs as a result of this. Daniel and the guests came across this elephant and were imppressed by the  bum scratching.

Hunter hunted.

A lot of things happen in the world of nature which when not documented it is not easy for people to understand and believe as was the case today of a black spitting cobra fighting and overpowering a Puff adder. If one compares the sizes of the two snakes, it  is not easy to imagine that a cobra would emerge the winner in the fight. On a game drive today, ranger Godson who loves snakes, watched a black cobra move over some flat rock into a small pool of water where a puff adder was resting, he bit the puff adder on the side of the belly and the pain made him twist over as it struggled to move away. The cobra quickly followed and gave more bites making the puff adder twist more and more with pain. The poison from the spitting cobra was reacting faster on the Puff adder as it soon ran out of strength and died.  Eventually the cobra was left trying to swallow its prey. Normally puff adders are slow to react and are not as agile as the cobras. Not many people are funs of snakes but the guests had a good spectacle from this event.

THREE BLACK RHINOS.

Today, ranger Godson and his guests came across some three black rhinos on the edge of the sand river. It was a wet morning after the previous night’s rains and the rhinos were out of their usual hideout in the bush lands.  They were a male and female with a calf of about five years of age which by now should have been independent for a new one to be born. This sighting is quite unusual as normally the black rhinos are solitary. The guests had a good view of these special animals as they walked in the open grasslands following each other while occasionally stopping to look around as their tails flap  sideways to keep off flies.

The sopa lion pride in maasi mara national reserve specialises in taking buffaloes for their meal. The pride which numbers between 17 and 20 are known to follow the big herd(about one thouand five hundred) and when need for a meal arises they team up and have always succeeded no matter how long it takes them. They are healthy and fit in all seasons.

Daniel left the camp with a family of four to the reserve to look for this pride. After a brief search in the territory, they  spotted them at a distance sorrounding a meal. They had brought down a buffalo in the morning but the resident males arrived and took over the meal. The meal being in the open and was a clear day, the cats were sun baked and  took refuge to nearby bushes.The one on sentry came to seek shade under our car! The king of the jungle also tried  labourisely to cover the blood and stomach residue to minimise attracting the scavangers.

The maasai mara is still pouring with rains and the grass growing high and higher everyday. This creats a scenario whereby if you are out on a game drive its tricky finding the cats, but  they also have the same problem locating prey. So for them to locate prey one of the best sites is on top of termite mounds to scanning . This was the case with japhet on full day game drive who spotted 3 lioness on a vantage point but later on dashed to a nearby bush to take a nap when they realised there was nothing in sight. They choose a nice sleeping method to spend the sunny part of day on the lashing grass.

The long rains are coming to an end but the Mara plains have received a good amount of rainfall over the last one month.

The grass has grown tremendously and most of the bulk grazers are enjoying feeding on the fresh green grass.

Martin and his four guests were out on a fullday game drive. They had a chance to see lots of different species while driving around but the most interesting was when they came across a herd of Elephants feeding. His guests found it facinating to see the amount of grass the full grown elly's were plucking with their trunks.

Elephants are mixed feeders with 75% of their diet consisting of grass.
