Since they invaded the Northern serengeti zone a few weeks ago on their way to the masai mara, the  wildebeests have made the river-crossings a daily event. Today, they were spread along the river on both sides and kept on moving from one crossing point to the other. In the course of the movements, they would form large groups and rush towards  the river as if  going to plunge  in directly only to slow down to taste the waters and then look around. Thereafter they would head back onto the plains and move along the river again.  We became tolerant of this behaviour and our patience paid off. When they at last  began the show, they had a very rough time as they kept on sliping on the wet rocks with some being swept away by the waters .At one point a huge Nile crocodile appeared from his sleeping point behind the rocks and swam slowly  towards  their path and everyone thought it would attack them, but to our dissapointment, it simply watched as they hurried to the otherside as if giving protection. We thought it had already had a few meals of these  animals since they  invaded  his territory  a few days ago.

The arrival of the wildbeest is well received by all the predators in the Mara game reserve.The big cats change the meal preference to the easy kill (Gnus). The long grass provide good hide outs for the cats in the biginning and when the long grass is trampled by the ungulates they get back to the stalking techniques.

This lioness was spotted stalking in the long grass and within a short while the wildbeest was wrestled down and took its time before embarking to feeding.

The migration continues to troop into the Mara in tens of thousands and the once recently empty savannah has gone live.The animals are approaching the Mara river where action with crocs will take place any day from today. This herd was spotted heading towards the roan hill after crossing the sand river. At some point the herd thought that walking will not get them there and opted to run raising dust high into the sky. Charles and his guests had this special treat of the migration.

As the Mara game reserve lashes with the dominant red oat grass ready to host the migration till probably october life is not easy on the other hand to the predator especially the ones with young ones. The grown up too, have challanges locating prey. Its not the first time nor the last time and life in the wild is full of challanges that only the fittest survive was the answer from Alex who also told that its nature way out in the wild.The guest wondered how the cubs would survive when mum goes hunting.

The female chetaah is not far away from the mara river and is walking her cubs across the savannah either looking for food or even running away from predators who if they get achance would not spare the punky cubs.

The migration continues to march into the mara through the sand river area and mostly this year the herds are entering into the Mara near the roan hill down to where the sand river meets the mara. The herds cross in big groups and can take upto two hours nonstop. Daniel and his four guests witnessed a herd that violently run away from the river banks but couldnt exactly establish the cause.

Reporting Date; 22.07.2012

When Daniel and his four guests left the camp the main mission was to see the crossing at the sand river. Daniel informed the guests that besides the animals being a long the river it has ever been difficult to predict the movement, just like the weather but nature may do a favour so lets cross the fingers and the journey started. The drive towars the river had interesting  sighting and the scenic sand river was admired by the guests.

Arriving at the river, they saw wildbeest and zebras on both sides of the river but continued down along to one famous crossing point only to find the animals running  and running towards the shallow river. Some all over sudden stopped to drink and others continued to the other side. At some stage something scared the herd and were running across maddly as if there was a predator chasing, but Daniel informed that they are always keen along the river because its a predators stalking areas and any minor movement will create a commotion.

MIGRATION UPDATE

Migration is now close to the  camp. Today we had thousands of wildebeests followed behind by handful of Zebra’s. We could see them at  Kichwa Tembo route ( Elephant head) heading towards the  sandriver close to the Masai mara/Serengeti  border .The big herd was  around Nyamalumbwa and Kunga circuits. Another big herd was also seen along  Bologonja River (Makutano Circuit) heading towards the Mara river ready for the crossing which is bound to take any place any time from now.This was mixed up with Elands,Topi’s and  Thompson Gazelles and has attracted   lots of  carnivores like Lions, Cheetahs, Leopards with scavengers  such as Hyenas and Jackals following the cats behind. Vultures are not left behind either. We shall continue seeing the migration daily until end of October early  November. Initially Guests were looking forward to the migration but now that the migration is here the interest has shifted to the crossing at the Mara river.

Finally the great migration has arrived into the Maasai Mara Game Reserve!  This is a frentic time when dominant bulls attempt to round up and mate with as many females as they possibly can.The herds will spend much of the ensuing three months around the Mara and its adjoining areas in search of fresh grazing, before the first hints of the rain back in the south begin to beckon.

Ferdinand and his guests drove along the sand river to watch the beasts cross into the Mara from Serengeti.He explained to the guests that this was a great spectacle of tens of thousands of wildbeest and zebras heading towards the rushing water of the Mara river.

These mega-herbivores came visiting the camp again as they have always done in the previous days. This is now a repetitive event in the camp. This time it was the female with calves of various ages that walked through the camp. We saw one mother pushing her calf forward with her trunk so as not to lose sight of it

The migration is undoubtedly one of the greatest shows on earth, and some people call it the world cup of wildlife. All signs are evident that its just about to arrive in the Mara as the front liners are already crossing the sand river heading towards the roan hill.

Alex and his two guest left the camp with  a mission to find pout what was happening along the border between serengeti and maasai mara game reserve  and  they out that the zebra trooping to the Mara along the Sand river.
