The great migration is trampling and mowing the long grass in the Mara Game Reserve at the moment and in some secrion where the wildbeest and zebras have not set afoot the grass is still high and giving the smaller animals tough time to graze. Daniel and his guests drove into two warthogs that heard the car arrive and were reluctant to give way meaning the food was too sweet to give way.

The  followers of  migration.

During the migration of the wildebeests, we do have predators that take the opportunity to follow these animals so as to have a constant supply of food. In the Serengeti, most of these predators are  lions that would  be seen sleeping or resting on the rocky outcrops. We are beginning to see some lions which are  new to the northern Serengeti area.  Some of these are yet to establish their territories and are therefore normadic. It becomes difficult for them should they stray into other lions' territories. After feeding on the wildebeests on the plains, they climb on to the higher grounds on the Kopies to either  sleep or  stare  at the plains below.

The arrival of the great migration into the mara brings alot of changes into pachyderm habitats. The noise made by the rutting ungulate and the young ones separated from the cows creates disturbance to the thick skinned mammals. This  rhino was moving away from a herd of wildbeest that was pushing its way towards Talek junction from the main road. The rhino moved towards the hills an area not preffered by the wildbeest as there is less water.

Daniel told the guests that the rhino population of late was increase as security measures have been put in place to protect not only the rhino but all wildlife in the country.

After letting the young one drag the food by a the bushes mother cheetah went into one of the bushes and waited to recover from the terrefic speed. The young punky one was quick to open the tommy from behind and started feeding. After about half an hour the mother cheetah came for her round to fill. she continued and any moment she raised her head high to check any intruder she looked even more beatiful with the red lips and whiskers.

Daniel informed the guests that cheetahs never return to their meal once they are done and they feed quickly because other biggger predators steal from them easily.

Before  full day game drive Daniels' guest asked the chances of seeing lions cub. Daniel informed them that the only pride nearby  with cub is the one near sand river kopjes. The journey started to the sand and on arrival the pride was not there. They opted to try leopard and cheetah country. The  leopard search rewarded yes, but was not as exiting enough like the cheetah hunting down the thompson gazzelle.

They  spotted it  and was thrilling watch it stalk, crawl at some point  and the chase from the start until it knocked it down. The young one helped the mother drag it into the nearby bushes before starting to feed.

August is one of the dry months in the Mara but we have received a good amount of rainfall over the last three days.

Early this morning Peter, Japheth and their guests were headed down to Sand river and were hoping to see if the rain had attracted more gnus and sure enough they saw thousands along the river bank. As they were driving around some rocky outcrop they saw a lioness sitting on-top of the the rock and they knew she belonged to the Sand river pride. As they drove to the other side of the rock the rest of the pride was peacefully busking. To everyones suprise six cubs were sitted next to one of the lactating lionesses. The two youngest cubs caught everybodys attention because they kept playing with each other while other pride members were relaxing.

The wildebeest migration has spread all over Masai mara with majority of the gnus hanging around Talek river.

Peter, Japheth and their guests were on a half-day game drive and within the few first minutes of their drive they came across two male lions feeding on a buffalo carcass. As they were proceeding down towards Talek river they came across thousands of wildebeest. A huge herd was gathering on the river bank and within afew minutes they started crossing causing a huge cloud of dust.

The great migration is moving on towards Talek river and big herds are spread throughout posee plains. Talek pride of lions is also enjoying the arrival and feasting heavily. The wildbeest are known not stay away from drinking water and keep within a radius of 5 kms so that they can drink at least once a day. The lions seems to be aware of this and hung around the river riperian waiting to ambush.

This herd was spotted by Daniel and his five guest on full day game drive quenching thirst at hammerkop dam next to the river. The herds this year are taking the route towards the main crossing at the heart of maasai mara with few at the new mara bridge crossing points.

With thousands of wildebeest and zebra all over the the Mara plains it is common to find them grazing and relaxing by the road side.

Peter and his guests were on a full-day game-drive and were headed down towards the great Mara river but on their way there they drove past several huge herds of gnus which were relaxing by the road side. His guests found to be an amaizing experience to see so many gnus all in one place and to drive right past them.
