Wine Cellar

Mara Bushtops has a unique wine cellar, where the climatic conditions are controlled using an ancient refrigeration technique involving the use of charcoal and evaporation. This method is effective at keeping the cellar at a temperature suitable for storing wine, without the need for electrical refrigeration.

Our cellar is stocked with a carefully selected range of wines from around the world, and aims to try to suit all tastes. From the more exclusive, such wines as Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1970, with the Chagall label, award winning African wines from the Stellenbosch, and includes a special community wine, called Mara, which is decorated with a beautiful Masai necklace made by local tribe’s womenfolk. The cellar can be visited every evening during a pre-dinner wine tasting, where guests can sample the wine, which has been specially selected by the Head Chef to best compliment his special dish of the day.

Our guests have enjoyed this cellar so much, that some have had bottles sent from other countries to compliment the existing cellar stock. These include wines from many privately-owned vineyards in Switzerland, Austria, France, South Africa and even includes an ice wine from Canada.
