The vast plains of the Serengeti comprise 1.5 million hectares of savannah.
Arguably, the Serengeti National Park is the world's most famous and celebrated wildlife reserve. The name of this phenomenal National Park, created to preserve the path of the world’s largest migration circuit, comes from the Masai term for ‘endless plains’, and these rolling grasslands provide an exceptional landscape for wildlife viewing. This is the epitome of safari country.
This land is justifiably famous for its huge concentrations of wildlife, especially the big cats, as well as lying at the heart of the Great Migration. The annual migration to permanent water holes of vast herds of herbivores, followed by their predators, is one of the most impressive natural events in the world.
This spectacular event sees a massive accumulation of 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 350,000 gazelles stretch their legs over 1,200 miles in an annual race to find enough water and green grass for their survival.
